I have painted a wall using Dulux 'Once' emulsion and it has gone all patchy - any advice please?

I painted a wall using Dulux 'once' emulsion but it went all patchy. I repainted using a base coat to eliminate the patchiness an again applied another coat of the emulsion. I came down this morning to find that the paint had dried ok except for a bit towards the top of the wall which I rollered over again. Unfortunate whilst I was doing this a splash of emulsion landing on the wall and where I rollered over it it has gone patchy again! it is only a small patch and so I am reluctant to repaint the whole wall yet again. I have painted a little polycell base coat over it with the intention of going over it with emulsion but will this work? I don't understand why this has happened as I have used this type of emulsion many times before. Any advice would be much appreciated!I have painted a wall using Dulux 'Once' emulsion and it has gone all patchy - any advice please?
once is a funny paint!

when you put it on you need to leave it alone.

if you try to roll over it straight away it will pull off

just lay it on and leave to fully dry it will even pull off at the tops if you try to cut it in too soon.

apply a second coat on the second day if possible and it will go on and cover great.

once is not once at all it will need 2 coatsI have painted a wall using Dulux 'Once' emulsion and it has gone all patchy - any advice please?
When you say you splashed the wall and that went patchy, it would have just needed longer to dry out. On that basis perhaps the patches are areas of wall that make the paint take longer to dry out. If not, contact Dulux.
This is a long question for an strait forward answerer, make sure it's fully dry before you go over as it will dry at different shade to when you put it on. It's not as ';once'; as they claim.
hiya caz, sounds like you did not stir it up enough, that is why it went patchy.
do it again
first off avoid any ';gimmick paint'; all the 1 coat non drip etc are rubbish. What was the substrate you painted like, i wonder if you have a lot of filler as this can effect the even porosity of a wall and leave the paint patchy. If this is the case another coat will do it and in the future apply a mist coat (water down paint 50/50)

or could just be did you give the paint a really good stir right to the bottom of the tin before use and again when you thined it?

hope this helps

I'm painting the outside of my house and I've been told that Dulux Weathershiled doesn't need masonry sealer ?

Outside paint job and my potential painter has stated thatwhen using Dulux Weathershield, no masonry sealer coat is required, just apply the paint direct to the walls. Is this correct, as it doesn't sound right to me ??I'm painting the outside of my house and I've been told that Dulux Weathershiled doesn't need masonry sealer ?
You don't need a sealer or primer with any exterior emulsion, (not especially because it is Dulux Weathershield). You only need a stabilising solution if the surface is friable (powdery) and then you would need it regardless of which paint you use, including Weathershield.

Wipe your hand over the existing paint surface. If you are leaft with any powdery residue on your hand it needs stabilising - otherwise it doesn't.I'm painting the outside of my house and I've been told that Dulux Weathershiled doesn't need masonry sealer ?
He's kind of right, the first coat of Weathershield is diluted down and this acts as the primer. I used this on brand new rendering and it did need both the diluted coat and the undiluted top coat as well. Where I was lazy and didn't do two coats, just the second undiluted one, I can see through the paint.

BTW most DIY stores have sales on at the moment, check out the paint offers before you let your decorator charge you full price + supply fee!
Weathershield does not require a base primer or sealer as long as the stone work or surfaces is sound clean and dry (new surfaces particularly must be fully dry)

However, if the masonry is powdery or flaky or has old flaky paint best get some ';polycell polyfilla'; (exterior) to fix defects if its powdery then yes use ';Weatershield Stabilising Primer'; but Don't prime or seal new or bare surfaces.
Its a good idea thin the first coat to act as a primer. Thinning helps it soak into the surface and not just sit on it.
Yeah it true plus its really thick paint and dries quickly but it is 拢22.99 a tin!!!
he`s right ...i use dulux weathersheid both here and in south of france ..where it gets really hot ...never had a problem yet ..have been using it for 40 years

I cant find it anywhere, ive tried B%26amp;Q, Wickes, and other large hardwares. All they have is Ronseals paint and grain and thats not suitable. Ive had no reply from the Dulux website which is currently moving.

The one-coat itself should be fine for using on radiators... What surface are you paintinng onto... is the radiator already painted? It is onto the original powder-coating?

If you're painting onto paint, occasionally, there can be a reaction...

Is the room particularly small or cold? - Is there adequate ventilation?
Sounds like you used a cheap paint instead of the metal paint that should have been used, then turned on the heat before the paint was completly cured. Just because it's dry to the touch doesn't mean it's cured.
I think you should really use a flat black spray paint to paint car radiators ---- not the glossy spray paint.

Anyway ----- the paint should ';bake'; in soon and the fumes will go away ~~~~~~~~~ unless --(??) there is a overheating problem ,with your cooling system.

If it';s a ';heat'; radiator used to heat your home(?) --- then it';s still going to take some time to finally ';bake'; in, and stop giving off fumes.

Next time ---- use a paint that is fast drying ,and low toxicity level --- read the label.

A high temp. bar-b-que spray paint probably should have been used, instead of what you used--- costs a little more($4-$5 can),but stands up better ,for your application.

    Have a nice day. -------------------------- +++Spock+++
You need to go to a paint shop and talk with them about this. You don't want to become sick or die from this. If it is cold where you live, use an electric space heater until you get some answers about the paint. Do not leave the space heater on while you are away from your house. For now read the paint can, even the small print and see what it cautions against.

  • We are decorating our new home. We have painted our walls in Dulux Perfectly Taupe. Need advice on carpet?

Have just bought a new home. We are not going to do much decor yet just paint the walls and change the carpets downstairs only as we will be doing it up properly in the next couple of years. We have chosen Dulux Perfectly Taupe for the walls in the living room but I am really unsure as to what shade of carpet will go and what colour settees. Any advice will be gratefully received. We are decorating our new home. We have painted our walls in Dulux Perfectly Taupe. Need advice on carpet?
Find a neutral carpet because paint color is way cheaper to change in the future than carpet is. My suggestions are light brown, cream, green, gray, blueish gray.

We just painted our living room and dining room and are getting new carpet. Our paint colors are pinkish-salmon on one wall, medium-dark gray on two walls, purplish-taupe on 3 walls. We chose a light-medium grayish-brown medium-long Frieze carpet. Sort've like a shag but a little shorter and thicker. The carpet hasn't arrived yet, but I think it will look nice. The carpet will go in the living room, the dining room has birch hardwood floors. We are decorating our new home. We have painted our walls in Dulux Perfectly Taupe. Need advice on carpet?
I re-carpeted my home several yrs ago I found it best to go with neutral colors like browns with light black swirls they hold up best to traffic as well as spills ,stay away from light colors such as biege, white, cream, and gray they might look nice but within a short period of time you'll notice small black dots appearing in the carpet and impossible to get rid of
I always get an oatmeal berber with several shades of tan, cream and brown. It goes with everything and shows almost nothing (two cats). Take a painted board to the carpet store to match the taupe in the walls.
Taupe will go with about anything, good choice. My suggestion would be to find a sofa ect. in the color you like (since you'll be able to keep it when you change everything in two years, and pick a color from that for the sofa. That way you won't have to buy a new sofa and carpet when you change everything out, just repaint) Much cheaper than rebuying everything again.

I want to emulsion my house and want to know which make of paint is the best ie dulux glidden etc?

If you are a DIYer ordinary Dulux emulsion (rather than the thicker trade version) would be the best. Gliddens is owned by Dulux and it is ok, but not as good. If you want colours to last longer and the maintenance cycle to be extended as long as possible then use Dulux. If your repainting next year or two it doesn't matter, Johnstone, Leyland, butnot any designer paint like Farrow and Ball etc. They are rubbish.I want to emulsion my house and want to know which make of paint is the best ie dulux glidden etc?
Where do you live? Paint brands vary from country to country.

In Canada, the best brands in my opinion are Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore, and Pratt %26amp; Lambert. Mid-range brands include CIL-Dulux, Behr, and Sears. Crappamundo brands include Glidden (the most overrated paint brand I can think of), Walmart, and most store brands (except Sears, which is surprisingly good for the price). Kilz is a good primer brand. Wood-Kote is a good brand of stain.

Edit to add: don't cheap out on paint. If you have to repaint every two or three years instead of every ten or if you have to apply eight coats instead of two, you're not saving money.I want to emulsion my house and want to know which make of paint is the best ie dulux glidden etc?
emulsion inside or outside ? it really does make a difference

if for instance , an entrance where there is a lot of usage lots of opportunities to scuff, scratch mark)

tick most boxes tn particular catagory. bingo

    choose shade and buy it

Your paint is probably just too thick to pump. Thin it down some and it should work. I think if it's not oil based you should be able to add a little water and keep mixing till you get it thin enough. From what I could tell when I did it, you don't really change the color that much and I probably added about 2 or 3 cups of water to a gallon of paint but it definitely helped the flow rate so it would pump.
I wish this was an answer - but the same thing happened to me today - my brand new machine has an engine sound but no paint is pumped to the tube - none at all. Is this a common problem? Have others had this happen or are we the only two in the world :)

the problem with the pod is you have to buy the paint specifically for it, its expensive and the quality of finish is poor.

What is the difference between normal dulux paints and dulux trade paints?

I am a qualified decorator and worked as a paint advisor in a trade decorators merchants.

Dulux trade is a concentrated version of the retail paint. It is more expensive and does not work out cheaper.

It's main advantage is to the professional decorator who can judge how much he wants to thin it according to the job in front of him. Most use it to try and obliterate in the least coats. There seems to be some evidence that the colours in trade paint stay truer for longer, but most people will want to repaint long before the retail version fades anyway.

Most DIYers will benefit from using retail Dulux as it is already thinned out for them and thicker paints are more difficult to apply and in emulsion leave more texture.in the finish The only exception are if you are emulsioning interior walls in the same colour and you want to try and get away with doing it in one coat, then trade paint is your best chance. The other time DIYers will benefit from trade paint is when painting exteriors. Then it is worth paying the extra because you want you exterior to last as long as possible. What is the difference between normal dulux paints and dulux trade paints?
The 'trade' paints tend to have more opacity (covering power).

Dulux decorators centres can mix ANY shade that you want, so choice of colour is not an issue. What is the difference between normal dulux paints and dulux trade paints?
    The price?
The simplest answer is Thickness...The same also applies to Crown, Macphersons and other good brands..
pigments, there is a difference in weight, the best quality(the trade one) will be heavier
Not a lot these days - 'trade' ranges used to carry more colours, but with in-store paint mixing, retail ranges are just as comprehensive.

You do get a greater choice of quality of finishes in trade ranges - I always specify oil-based Satinwood as I don't rate the finish or durability of the more commonly available water-based versions. You can also get traditional finishes like housebuilders use for newly-plastered walls which allow the wall to breathe - not normally available at the DIY outlets, or in the the kind of (more economic) quantities that the professionals use, albeit in a limited range of colours.
I used to work in homebase so i definately know the answer to this:

Dulux trade paint is thicker and uses more premium chemicals within the paint, which makes trade paint an ideal paint to use in commercial envirmonents, the paint is more hard wearing and has a better and improved durability, its more hard wearing and also trade paint comes in larger sizes compared to dulux home paints, and also you pay more money for it!

But trade paint mainly comes in white and magnolia colours and or black, very rarely you will see trade coloured paint!

Dulux home comes in every colour, finnish, and is made for many applications and enviroments mainly targeted for the home!

    Thats your answer my friend!

  • Dulux paint pod, different paint????

I have recently bought a dulux paint pod and was wondering if different paint can be used in it? Obviously i will need to buy at least one tub but once this is used could i put paint in it and use it the same way? just for the simple reason dulux paint is very expensive (29.99 per tub) so i would like to pay less and get more variety of colours. any advice appreciated ;-)Dulux paint pod, different paint????
First of all, take it back. You will soon find out why.

You must use their paint or it will clog, and at 拢29.99 a shot, the whole thing ain't a great deal. Just like the fence spray systems. That's how they'll make a fortune off you while you wonder what on earth you bought if for when using it.Dulux paint pod, different paint????
Probably best not to as it could cause problems.

Having bought one I would say dismiss the negative comments already posted as I found it excellent.

I found I used about a THIRD of the paint I normally used with traditionally methods and so it worked out cheaper overall.

There is so little spray back / splatter that I stopped bothering to use dust sheets!

It is also much quicker as you are not constantly stopping to reload a roller.

Once finished it sucks the paint back out of the roller so you don't waste any.

The self cleaning is good but very noisy and be prepared to repeat the process a couple of times but it is better than doing it by hand!!
Buy a set of paint brushes, this machine is not worth the money, even if you use the right paint, take it back before you use it get your money back
i would say so, i wanted one of these but wasnt going to pay that amount for it!

Has anyone with a dulux paintpod re-filled an empty container with a cheaper brand of paint, & had success?

I can't see how it would matter. Dulux is a brand/trade name. It's formulation in substance is probably only a negligible difference, if any, from most other formulations.

The differences certainly are in vehicles used in various sheen's, and amounts of pigments added to those vehicles to produce various results.

Paint consistency is pretty standard, whether the gallon cost $15 or $35. The only other noticeable difference would be in primers and ceiling paint

Dulux Paint Pod - anyone used it...?

    What's it like? Any good?

ThanksDulux Paint Pod - anyone used it...?
by the time you have set it up you could have rolled it with a standard roller.

these types of rollers are a good idea in theory but are really just a gimmick.

you will be constantly refilling it and you will still have to cut it all in with a brush.

i will give you one good tip! buy yourself a telescopic roller pole with the spring clip for easy extension not the twist type.

the clip spring is a godsend on stairs and landings as you can extend them in a second.Dulux Paint Pod - anyone used it...?
Yea my cousion just moved into a new house and she bought it. It is really good and the cleaning part (were it cleans the roler thing) acctually works. The only problem we have found is the paint is expensive for it, other that if your decorating the hole house then i would reccomened it, decorating one room then its not worth spending the money on =]

    Good Luck xx
I would even start with that question, my question would be to you is why there so expensive and its a complete rip off!!!!

Don't even buy one, just get a normal brush and a tin of paint and do it the manual way.

    Dulux paint-pod system?

has anyone tried it and how much does it costDulux paint-pod system?
I was in B%26amp;Q yesterday and they had a demonstration on, it looks brilliant! It sucks the paint up onto the roller which has a really long tube, so you can stand on a ladder and paint the ceiling without ever having to get down and refill the roller, the lead is about 9 or 10 feet long. It's really light weight as well. Plus even better, it actually cleans itself afterwards, genius!!!

I can't wait to get one, I have to do all the decorating in the house because my husband is useless haha! B%26amp;Q were selling them at 拢69.99. I looked on Kelkoo and Ebay to see if I could get it any cheaper but it seems to be pretty much the same. Hope this helpsDulux paint-pod system?
Cracking idea for the DIY'ers. If anyone in the trade buy's one, I would avoid them. By the time you've fannied on with one, I would have had the room painted out and gone by then.

  • If I paint my stair with dulux satinwood will they be slippery?

Do you think they will be slippy if i walk up and down them with socks on??If I paint my stair with dulux satinwood will they be slippery?
I did mine with satinwood and have nearly broke my neck several times, it may sound daft but if you can live with a bit of texture in your paint add a touch of sand to the paint as this will give you grip.If I paint my stair with dulux satinwood will they be slippery?
You should be fine as long as they are kept unpolished. Give them a good wash down once in a while and it will stop any residue build-up which causes slippiness..
They will be slightly slick in socks. Just be careful and I hope you don't have children. If so you may want to add a carpet runner.
nope not at all - did mine with satinwood - it wears down a little to a nice finish.
hi your stairs should be fine but if you are really worried about them being slippery then leave painting the steps until last and add a little bit of sand to the stain it will act as anti-slip

hope this has been of some help to you

i feel they are just a gimmick to make the diy buyers part with there cash!

you will still have to cut in all the edges by hand and buy the time you have set up your pod you could have already finished with a roller.

get yourself a purdy pole as they save you loads of time .

they are a telescopic pole that elongates and clips in place in seconds rather than the old pull out and screw type.

Yes!Does low-odour acrylic satinwood paint (eg Dulux Easycare) look good?
Hi, to be honest with you it looks and lasts much the same as if you just painted it with silk emulsion. I've used Dulux easy care and was really disappointed, I've painted doors with silk emulsion and have been far more satisfied. Make sure you sand your woodwork first and my advice - save yourself some money. Good Luck
It looks ok but I agree with serenity,we used it in our hall and was disappointed it's not very hard wearing (the slightest knock or if you get a mark on it and rub too hard) and it chips off
if you apply it properly .it looks great

Drying time between coats of Dulux Matt Emulsion Paint?

Hi - We have been painting previously painted wallpaper allowing 4 hours drying time between coats. A friend only leaves one hour between coats to save time, but I am worried this would harm the finish of the paint . Does anyone know the effect of leaving inadequate drying time please?Drying time between coats of Dulux Matt Emulsion Paint?
1 hour is not enough. if the can says 4 hours then that is what you should do. most of the time i leave till the next day. if you do not allow ample drying time when you paint the next coat it could slightly lift the previous coat also you will not get nearly as good coverage and you will use more paint when the previous coat is not properly dry. always read and follow the instructions on the can they are there for a reason.Drying time between coats of Dulux Matt Emulsion Paint?
Under normal circumstances you will just be putting two coats of emulsion on in total. On water based emulsion putting a second coat after the first has been touch dry for an hour will be ok. But any further coats will need the full 2-4 hours recommended for emulsion. If you were to keep applying coats then you would get a poor texture in your finish.

I left a job once where the contractor expected me to paper and paint one wall the same day. Emulsioning over wet paper was not unusual for them. And they had been doing it longer than me.
I do it all the time for speed...sometimes if the room is cold and damp I have to wait...but usually it`s fine...
1 hour will do, it dont harm it
Just turn your heating up so it drys quicker!

No.It's far too expensive unless you intend to decorate a whole house and I'm not sure it is as good as they say.

How it can clean it'self sufficiently well enough not to contaminate another colour that you use is doubtful too.

A bog standard roller will do the job great even if you have to keep filling it with the paint.

There is no difference in color, but there is a difference in sheen, which can be just as annoying if you are trying to match color on a wall patch or touch up. The sheen difference is in the amount of light reflected in the paint.

Has anyone used the Dulux paint pod thingy ?

and is it any good and does it really clean itself?Has anyone used the Dulux paint pod thingy ?
My husband and I purchased one a few months back after seeing a demonstration at our local B%26amp;Q and then having a go for ourselves.

Well last week my husband took the plunge and opened it and painted the hall whilst I was out. It's an average size hall and he says it took no time at all.

He loves gadgets, and this one got the thumbs up from him. He said the plus points are, you do not have to bend - like when you need more paint on your brush or roller you keep bending down to the tray, well with the paintpod you don't - you press the button on the handle and get an even amount of paint - this really shows on the wall - i can see the difference in the walls we've painted by roller and brush compared to the paint pod. The paintpod wall is very even and smooth looking.

You get a brush and stuff in the pack for finishing off and doing your edging etc.

When you are done the painpod sucks in all the extra left over paint back into the paint pot, then you just place a jug of 2 litres of water in place of the paint and press clean and the paintpod does actually clean itself!! - Bonus!

I think the only down points I can find to the paint pod is that you have to use the paintpod paints and they only come in one size and that one size is 拢30 a bottle and only comes in a small selection of colours.

If you have a large area to paint then i do recommend the paintpod, and again if you have a husband that loves gadgets and you need some painting done, this is the way to entice him to do it!Has anyone used the Dulux paint pod thingy ?
yeah it's so much easier to use and less time is spent cleaning up. i brought one to paint my bedroom had it done in like in less than an hour and it usually takes a lot longer.
I've thought about it recently but not yet bought one, so I shall be keen to read the answers.

  • Does anyone else other than Dulux make Supermatt paint?

Dulux is a brand name; ';Supermatte'; is their trades/';nickname'; for the type of finish offered in the formulation. It's kind of like a patented ';tag'; similar to other manufacturers; and most used strictly as a promotional thing. ';My Dog's bigger than your Dog'; sort of. Knowing that formulation will allow you to compare other brands.

Steven WolfDoes anyone else other than Dulux make Supermatt paint?
I'm not sure but you can actually buy matting agent separately and add it to your paint to dull down the finish. Check out these guys. (Its their product code PQ14 you need.) They will supply you with larger quantities to special order, and quote you a price over the phone as well as advising you properly if its suitable for your needs or not, and if not they can probably suggest something that is.

How is the quality of Dulux (ICI) Paint?

My painter wants to use Dulux (ICI) paint instead of Behr Premium which I recommended. Can someone comment on the quality in comparison? How is the quality of Dulux (ICI) Paint?
Yes, Dulux is a quality paint and the reason is that your painter probably has an account set up with the Dulux store near you. If you want one paint over another it would be best if you demand that your painting be done with what you want. Another thing to remember is that the quality and color may be the same but the price will most likely be higher for the Behr as the painter has to pay for it out of his pocket before painting. ICI will let him hold payment for 15 to 30 days. Plenty of time for him to complete the job and pay them.

I work with several paint and stain lines at my job and although ICI is not a customer Behr is. I still have used both products in a factory setting with a spray booth and both work fine. As far as the odor Behr is greatly lower. How is the quality of Dulux (ICI) Paint?
Dulux paint is very comparable to Behr. However, I am more partial to Behr because there is very low odor, pricing is better and the quality is great. Behr now has a paint and primer mix (all in one can) Dulux does not offer that. The painter can make suggestions but at the end of the day you are the client and it is your money. I would insist on the product that I want and if the painter doesn't agree then hire a new painter.

If my DuLUX paint freezes is it any good ? I'm going to use it on my walls in the garage?

Depends how it thaws out, take it in a the house and let if thaw out, to room temp, make sure it has no clumps and the color mixes well, no colorant seperation, then there is no problem with using it .With the freezing process it can get somewhat watered down where the color would not come out right (since its going in a garage chances are, it shouldnt matter if the color isnt exactly what it was). However with me, if its been in there longer than 2-3 years and it doesnt look good as far as the color ,ect than i would just get a new gallon.Hope it helps you.If my DuLUX paint freezes is it any good ? I'm going to use it on my walls in the garage?
Many will say it is now no good, but that's just not true. A friend of mine is a pro painter, and he occasionally has paint freeze on him. It thaws, then works just fine. Mix well, though -- try a mixer that fits into a hand drill. Looks a little like a boat propeller.

First; one cannot expect much of commercial house

paint (or almost any paint) from the big box and

discount stores. You really get what you pay for with

paint. There are so many ad dollars loaded in quality

cannot go in the can. Heck you can buy interior wall

paint at Walmart for $7 a gallon! The can and label cost $1.50 so that leaves $5.50. Walmart made a profit so how much quality do you think went in the can? Zip, zero Nada!

And yet there are long lines in the paint department.

It's the same story at HD, Lowes, Menards and others.

Quality is considerably better with products from the

global giants such as SW, ICI and Valspar but the same

rule of economics applies; big ad dollars, thousands

of salesmen and big administration means quality

cannot go in the can. There is no argument that when

you buy paint you are paying for their ad and

    administration budget.

There are five kinds of latex resin with 100% acrylic

being at the top of the pile for quality. I wouldn't

apply anything in an outdoor architectural application

except 100% acrylic and you are unlikely to find 100%

acrylic at the box stores. Even if you did it would be

lacking in other ingredients such as binders and solid

content. One of the best telltales for judging quality

is to look at the back of the label where it lists

solid content by volume. This isn't an ad for Top

Secret Coatings products, just a fact. Our products

always include higher solid content by volume which

equals quality. It's also why our products spread

further, adhere better, and last longer.

    Hope this helps.
Use either Dulux or Crown they are both good

Go for the type that only need one coat and are non drip , it helps reduce chances of spill
well i find great mills/focus paint or b%26amp;q own branded paint just as good as dulux paint and its alot cheaper. i dont use any other cheaper brands though as they tend to be more watery than paint.
Dulux is good but it's not the only make. Try Gliddens or Crown or Johnsons. Some cheap own brands (but not all, some are actually made by these main companys anyway under another name) are mostly water so it ends up being a false economy.
always buy dulux it will cover some jobs in one coat here is a trick that all painters do apply base coat in a mat magnolia emulsion then if you are colour coating on top some colours cover in one coat another good quality paint is McPherson's it is a bit cheaper than dulux i am not a great lover of crown cheap paint means more work its time consuming when you have to put on extra coats
Not true at all.. You would get just as good results from Tesco or Wilkinson's paint. Paint should not be all that an expensive part of your decorating budget.
I am a painter by trade, and I mostly use top of the line paint for many reasons. With water borne paint(formerly know as latex), premium paints don't dry as fast, letting you ';work'; the paint for a more even finish. Premium paints are also more durable, cover better, and can be cleaned easier when dry. Having said that, I use Sherwin Williams paint almost exclusively, and they do sell a couple of contractor grades that are pretty good, and $10.00- 15.00 cheaper per gallon. Of these I prefer Pro-Mar 200, and it works pretty well in most cases. Remember, it is easier to cover dark colors with light, than light with dark. If you have white or light walls, and want to go darker, use a good primer that is tinted to 50% of the final color, and you will cut down on on the number of top coats. Colors with a lot of pigment, ie deep reds or blues will often take 3 or more coats to get good coverage. Most paint stores also sell miss matched paints very cheap. These are paints that were mixed, but didn't match the color the customer was after. You can often find premium miss matched paints for $5.00 or 6.00/gallon.
Dulux or Crown cover in less coats than 'own brands' their superior quality will win every time and it is the result that is important not the cost.

Any thing to do with your house I recommend spend that bit extra

    I personally prefer Dulux
I don't think it makes a lot of differance whether you use Dulux or cheap paint, ok Dulux is a named brand, but i have found that some other paint is just as good.
Dulux is far better quality for when you may need to wipe a mark from a wall. Other paints (wilko's) can become a lot paler when rubbing the mark off whereas dulux remains the same colour.
As barking mad says, it is false economy to use cheapo paint, use Dulux for a job that you will be proud of and will last without discoloring, flaking and all of the other problems associated with cheap paint.
Of course its better, and even better than Dulux is Dulux Trade.
We have done a lot of painting and decorating over the years, and have found dulux waaaay to expensive and not that great to work with. I will never use their suede paints again. I prefer to use Taubmans paints.

    Just my personal opinion.
dulux is better quality than other so dulux is kinda better if you dont agree check out this website

    its a link (**i hope**)
Yes i find Dulux the best - but professional painters do have a cheaper paint which they use on all jobs, Gliden it's called.

Has anybody used the Dulux Paint Pod machine and if so what is your opinion of it and is it worth buying?

and does it actually do what it says in the advert

ThanksHas anybody used the Dulux Paint Pod machine and if so what is your opinion of it and is it worth buying?
Uum Fifi obviously hasn't done any DIY lately!!

Sorry, I have got mine now but have not yet used it.

The only problem with this machine is that the only paint you can use is the pods - and not only is the colour range very restricted but the pods only come in one size!!

I wrote an email to Dulux the other day asking if they intended to increase the colour choice and bring in smaller pods or refills so that smaller rooms and/or feature walls could benefit and await their reply with interest...

I have had a lot of other work going on at home, so have not yet played with my new toy.... Can't wait to do that stairwall though - the paint is said to be splatterproof so I should be able to do it from the landing instead of climbing up a ladder!

I hear that B%26amp;Q have another half price offer on the machines - if you can get one at that price should be well worth going for... Good Luck! Has anybody used the Dulux Paint Pod machine and if so what is your opinion of it and is it worth buying?
Hello, do you mean the colour scanner bit?

I used to work this machine.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

What you have to remember is it will only pick the nearest dulux colour to the colour you have chosen.

If it is a textured material it is less successfull because it shows different shades..

But generally it is quite good. Just be prepared to accept that it might not be 100% accurate.

Dulux trade paint problems. Is anybody else having any problems with it?

Pay through the nose for it and it doesn't cover anymore.Dulux trade paint problems. Is anybody else having any problems with it?
unless you have got a rogue tin .ive tried every type as a builder and dulux is the best by far ..never had a problemDulux trade paint problems. Is anybody else having any problems with it?
I never had a problem but I use the highest quality 3/4'; nap roller usually the 18'; ones and put it on at 6 mills wet that will give a 3 1/2 to 3 dry film thickness it will make a difference if you are painting with a dark color or red ,Orange or yellow as they are tough to cover
We had some interesting emulsion paint which never dried at all for some reason. Don't think it was Dulux though?
i am a painter and i use leyland johnstone, it is good
REFUSE to buy dulux paint. Wasted sooo much money on their suede paint and trips back and forth with tinting and retinting to get the color they advertised in the store only for it look like total #$@# on the wall.

    I only use Taubans paints.
Take the tin back to the retailer. They will send it back and give you a new tin.Even the best firms have problems now and again. When you go round the different manufacturers and see how it is made you would not even think of buying some of the other crap.
I personally think Dulux is over priced crap. I never buy it but gave in to the idea of buying that one that goes on pink and dries white for a ceiling. It was awful, there was something wrong with it because it smelled like parmesan cheese, it was putrid!! I always buy Homebase paint, covers lovely good to work with and hard wearing. Second choice would be Crown.

  • Does dulux paint mixing cost more than normal?

i really need to know soon as pos.Does dulux paint mixing cost more than normal?
of course, so its called deluxDoes dulux paint mixing cost more than normal?
    'fraid so
its about the same as normal dulux
Are you asking if it costs more to mix Delux paint s over others, or asking if Delux paint costs more then other paints. There is usually no charge to mix /tint paint. You question is confusing.
It can if you go for the accent colors, such as dark red. The pigments cost quite a bit, and deep colors take a lot of it.

You may get charged extra, or else the paint will have a higher price for the ';ultra-deep'; tint base.
no you are paying extra for the brand name all big companies do it not just paint.

yes i have worked in a factory that makes the stuff and also as a paint sprayer and going back to my first job i was doing the appreticship for painting and decorating all them years ago
. . . yes, yes, yes - you're better off choosing a standard colour and buying it in the Sales (which are every few weeks these days) - but if you buy the paint-mixing make sure you get enough to do the whole job - if you have to go back for more it will probably be a slightly different colour, no matter what they say . . .
Yes - about 5-10% more compared to ready mixed depending on the type of paint and the size of the tin.

In my opinion it is worth paying the extra to get quality paint in exactly the right shade, especially if you are matching to fabric, wallpaper, furniture etc.
Yes, quite a bit. You pay for the extra pigments and the use of the mixer and the time of assistant. You end up, though, with a custom-made colour!

Ask at your local trade store, there are other brands that might be cheaper. (Might?? As sure as eggs is eggs Leyland etc ARE cheaper!!)
yes it does... and the colour isnt very good either.. i asked for a fuchsia pink.. and got red!
Don't know, but Leyland's own paint can be mixed to the same colours Dulux have and cost about a third less!
Yes slightly more expensive if its matched but it's good quality paint which is very important.
it all depends on the color you are having mixed. a lot of places wont charge extra for doing a custom mix...the price difference comes in the different basae needed to make the color , colorsmade from white or partel bases should not differ much if at all. Colors with deep or neutral bases will cost more.Iam a painting and drywall contractor so i know this stuff

Which Dulux paint shade is actually light brown?

The colour scheme for my bedroom is browns, I've purchased the curtains, paper and carpet. Last weekend I painted the walls in Dulux 'Malt Chocolate' and it has come up with a lilac edge to it. This clashes with everything else!

Does anyone know which Dulux shade paints on as a true light brown/beige colour to suit the scheme?

My local store does not have samples and I need it finished over this weekend.Which Dulux paint shade is actually light brown?
I've just painted one wall in my living room ';muddy puddle'; and it comes out the colour of milky coffeeWhich Dulux paint shade is actually light brown?
Bracken salts and Salisbury stones range may help you.

Whats the difference between trade paint as apposed dulux paint?

We just wanted to know if theres any significant difference between trade paint and normal Dulux paint for example.

Is it called trade paint because of the size of the pot ie 15 litres or is the quality a bit naff?

I'm only asking as my daughter has a dark cerece walls and wants it re painting cream and we wondered if the trade paint would be suficient.

ThanksWhats the difference between trade paint as apposed dulux paint?
Trade paint and brand-name paints do vary in quality (ratio of pigment to water etc): it's not just called trade paint because of the size of the pot.

I wouldn't use Wickes' own brand white emulsion again -- I had to use three coats just to cover bare plastered walls (yes, the plaster was dry!) -- In exasperation, went and bought Dulux and it did the job in a single coat. I reckon it was actually less expensive in the end than the Wickes' paint (and took a third of the time).

Having said that, B%26amp;Q's own brand has a pretty good reputation -- there's a handful of reviews here: http://www.ciao.co.uk/B_Q_Emulsion_White鈥?/a> so you may want to try that.

Since you're trying to cover deep cerise walls, I'd be tempted to go for one of the emulsions that claim to be 'one-coat' jobs.

Good luck!Whats the difference between trade paint as apposed dulux paint?
There's not much difference these days. They used to carry a greater range of colours (under BS4800) than domestic ones, but that has largely gone because you can have any colours mixed on demand. It used to be that yu would need to hire a decorator to get the trade colourd which was good for them (not so good for the customer).

For some colours (Magnolia and White) the trade sizes are bigger. I think there is some misconception about the quality in most instances it is identical - if it was duff they wouldn't sell much to what after all should be their regular customers. Wickes products are pretty good, I have found, but it is possible that they keep changing suppliers so you may have been ynlucky. Cheap paints at the local hardware store are another matter and you should stay well-clear.

If it was me, I would use a water based undercoat for your ceiling btw, as it is quite a change, find one hat is compatible with the emulsion top coat.
I'm a buyer for a property maintenance company. Most paints from DIY stores is of about the quality, although the cheapest paints will be thinner and take more coats to cover. If you have a trade supplier near your location (Dulux Centre) the paint that they sell cost more than that from a DIY store, but the quality is far better. If you think it may take a few coats to cover buy a cheap white emulsion and undercoat with that.

    Good Luck
Trade paint is often an inferior quality - it's for those who want to do the job quickly and cheaply.

For your own home, I highly recommend deluxe.

One more tip: You will be much happier (and the work will be easier) if you prime your dark walls first.
Trade paints are frequently more densely pigmented (so greater covering power; It's cheaper overall to buy better paint than pay labour for that 2nd coat). Dulux is pretty good anyway...
trade paint just normally comes in bigger tins with no fancy artwork on them like you would normally get in the shops

dont' think the quality is any different x
